Comment On Moving Technology Forward

"I saw this sign in the window of an empty storefront," Jason Sullivan wrote, "and I can't decide if the biggest WTF is using poster board, stencils and multiple colors of what appears to be chalk in their quest of 'moving technology forward', or the fact that they apparently made a mistake while putting the 'N' in consulting and just decided to use a bit of masking tape to correct it, rather than flip the board over and start again." I like the chalk sign. They may not have their color printer yet, but a typo using a manual stencil? A sure sign of wtf's to come!

Here's the real WTF with that first one:

1991 - Mellatech, Inc. owner Graduates from University of Kansas with BS in Film Studies

It's 7 years before the owner of this company did graduate work (doesn't give a degree, either) in anything IT related. So therefore they're one of those "Hey, doing computers is easy!" people.

I hope they get run out of business. We don't need more schlubs like that running IT companies.

maybe he's one of those people that actually gets real world work before getting an MS or PHD. Who knows with out more info. Oh wait there is more. He worked as a Network admin for quite a few years before being promoted to manager and then starting his own company. Does he not know the secret IT handshake or something?

On the "About Us" page-
1)encompases = encompasses
2)"House Call" = house call
3)provid = provide
4)kids "X-Box" = kid's X-Box or kids' X-Box
5)apoointment = appointment
6)Graduates = graduates
7)Formulated = formulated
8)Incorporates = incorporates
9)The last bullet point ends with a period, but none of the others do.

10)Welcom = Welcome
11)"Mellatech, Inc. professionals will come to your home or business, at your request and assess your current computer(s) and/or your network infrustructure."

It is in Brisbane, Australia. The park thing is called the Post Office Square (POS). POS pretty much describes the mall thing, it is an underground tunnel with dodgy fast food joints.

Also there are freaking Ibis everywhere.

It's not that he has real world work experience, its the fact that he seems to have jumped onto the computer/IT bandwagon after going to school for something totally unrelated. Like he woke up one morning and said "You know, I'm good with computers. Let me try to get into that field."

I'm sure he has the skills to do it (just probably dyslexic and/or not a native English speaker).

I mean my degree is pretty shit, but at least it's in an IT related discipline (networking).

Most of the WTFs on this site are submitted voluntarily and we usually attack the system or 'the man' and not a human being.

I would guess the guy is dyslexic. It's a real condition, and certainly forgivable. But you'd think by the time he graduated from college and set up a business, he would have realized the wisdom of having his writings proofread by someone with strong spelling, grammar and punctuation skills. Or better yet, of hiring a professional to do his website (and his door poster, for that matter).

Encounters with bums are an everyday thing here (I work in the heart of downtown Dallas). Yep, they're generally dirty and smell bad. There's a little walled-in area on the sidewalk a block from here that they use for a urinal. You start to smell it half a block away.

I wonder how long it would take me to look dirty and smell bad, if I was homeless...

I suppose it's possible that his kid wanted to make a sign for daddy's new business. Everyone was all like, "awww that's so cute." and then they smiled, thinking about how fast she's growing up. They probably figured it would give the impression of a family business, all chipping in together.

Maybe they'll Google the company some day as a family... see how daddy's business is doing. And find this.

Ouch.

I suppose that would mean the kid would have had to have written the website too, though.

Never mind.

I remember back in 1996 there was a company whose business model was helping people set their VCR clocks. I think it was eVCRclock.com and they got millions in VC funding which they promptly spent on Aeron chairs, foosball tables, Jolt cola and a Super Bowl commercial featuring a sock puppet throwing a sledgehammer through a massive VCR blinking 12:00.

Did I remember that or did I just drop acid and surf over to Mellatech's web site???? Shhh, I can hear the pixels breathing.
